Sheng, an ancient reed instrument in China, is usually made of thirteen bamboo pipes of different lengths and used for playing. It consists of three parts: Sheng reed, Sheng flute and Sheng Dou. It is pronounced by the air vibration in Sheng flute caused by the vibration of Sheng reed. Bands often use twenty-one springs and twenty-four spring soprano Sheng. In traditional instrumental music and Kunqu Opera, Sheng is often used as the accompaniment of other wind instruments such as flute and suona, adding pure four or five tones to the melody. In modern Chinese Orchestra, Sheng can play the role of melody or accompaniment.


Articulation principle:
The basic structure of Sheng is that the reed is sealed with wax on the lower end of the Sheng tube (also known as "seedling tube" or "Sheng seedling") and inserted into the Sheng bucket.
"Er Ya Jie Tian": "big Sheng is called nest." Jin Guo Pu notes: "in the pipe gourd, the reed pipe ends."
There is a finger hole near the bottom of each pipe. When playing, press the finger hole at the lower end of the pipe according to the need of sound intake, and stimulate the spring to produce coupling vibration with the air column in the pipe by blowing or inhaling with the blowing nozzle (also known as "click").
The tube is set with silver wire to mark the pitch.
